Sony aggressive going in to Sundance

MatukewiczEvans Horror film Insidious was one of Sonys hits last year. Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions is poised to be an aggressive buyer at Sundance, according to acquisitions exec Joe Matukewicz.Making his Sundance debut with SPWA, the recently hired exec says the company offers something unusual: "The power and backing of a studio but the care of an indie" -- plus the flexibility to position a film via one of Sony's multiple arms, including wide-release label TriStar and faith-based label Affirm.SPWA prexy Steve Bersch is gearing up for a busy Sundance with help from senior veep Matukewicz as well as VP Tana Evans and director of acquisitions Lejo Pet. Michael Helfand, exec veep of business affairs, will join the team on the ground.Looking at this year's festival lineup, Matukewicz said it "feels more upbeat and more broad than it has in the past. There are fewer small dramas and more comedies, and I feel the Midnight section is one of the strongest I've ever seen." He joined SPWA from Relativity and spent a decade working at Paramount. "Before, if I bought a movie, I knew who was going to release it and what the company's strengths and limitations were. What's different and really interesting is the variety of options we have access to here. It's all about finding the right home for the movie, and we're actively working to expand that list of people and companies we can go to."Options for release strategies include a wide release through Sony, working with an arm like Sony Pictures Classics or with companies SPWA has output deals with including Roadside Attractions or Samuel Goldwyn Films. "FilmDistrict is a logical partner on a lot of our movies, and we're continuing to work with them," Matukewicz said, despite the departure of Bob Berney from the fledgling distrib that has partnered with SPWA since its launch. "We're thoughtful about the movies we buy and when we do buy them, we care about the partners we bring on. We approach these movies as a partnership, and our partners as true creative collaborators," he explained. It's that type of flexible approach that helped SPWA gross $200 million at the box office in 2011, with pics including James Wan's surprise horror hit "Insidious," Zoe Saldana starrer "Colombiana," wedding comedy "Jumping the Broom," inspirational sports pic "Soul Surfer" and faith-based "Courageous.""SPWA made good deals on those movies, particularly with regard to how the deals were structured," noted Matukewicz, who said the arm is ramping up acquisitions, productions and pre-buys.With VOD becoming increasingly important, studios are still figuring out how to best structure deals. SPWA was created to buy content for Sony's various distribution platforms, so VOD is a very important part of big Sony's business strategy. Matukewicz is particularly excited about the development of production division Stage 6. The label previously released direct-to-video titles but is now moving more into theatrical projects, including Whitney Houston starrer "Sparkle." "We're buying from the script stage and actively closing a couple of pre-buy deals to finance modestly budgeted movies," said Matukewicz. Contact Jeff Sneider at jeff.sneider@variety.com

'Peter' catches a theater

Peter Pan prequel "Peter and the Starcatcher" has caught itself a Broadway home, with the show set to begin perfs in March at the Brooks Atkinson Theater. Play is one more piece of the 2011-12 Rialto season clicking to place as up-and-running productions lose steam in the post-holiday slump. "Peter" snatches up its spot from "Relatively Speaking," the trio of one-acts by Woody Allen, Ethan Coen and Elaine May that has recently seen sales dwindle despite healthy early frames. "Relatively Speaking" shutters Jan. 29. Among other theaters to come up for grabs in recent days, the Walter Kerr, former home to short-lived tuner "Lysistrata Jones," will be home to "Clybourne Park," while soon-to-shutter "Chinglish" will make way for the spring bow of "Magic/Bird" at the Longacre. "Peter," which earned generally glowing reviews in an Off Broadway run last season, reps yet another new play added to the season sked, alongside a slate that also includes "Other Desert Cities" and the upcoming "The Columnist," among others. Casting for the Rialto incarnation of "Peter" remains to be announced, although it's generally expected that the majority of the Off Broadway cast -- which included Adam Chanler-Berat as Peter Pan and Celia Keenan-Bolger as the titular starcatcher -- will return. The one definite exception is Christian Borle, who previously played Peter's familiar pirate nemesis but won't be back due to his starring role on NBC skein "Smash." Helmed by Roger Rees and Alex Timbers, the play by Rick Elice ("Jersey Boys") is adapted from a 2004 novel by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson. Developed by Disney Theatrical Prods., which remains affiliated with the production, show is produced on Broadway by Nancy Nagel Gibbs, Greg Schaffert, Eva Price and Tom Smedes. "Peter and the Starcatcher" begins previews March 28 ahead of an April 15 opening. Contact Rick Kissell at rick.kissell@variety.com

Glam Slam: Globes Style From The Red Carpet

First Published: January 16, 2012 11:20 AM EST Credit: WireImage LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Caption Charlize Theron poses at the 2012 Golden Globe AwardsIve just left the red carpet and my head is spinning a mile a minute. It was the most awesome Golden Globes carpet ever. It was a complete traffic jam of stars coming up to our platform Brad and Angie, Madonna (yes, Madonna!) George Clooney, Sofia Vergara, Charlize Theron. one after another fast and furiously. my fingers actually got tired as I was quickly trying to type and send everything to Facebook as it was happening. I couldnt keep up with all the action! Now, I am backstage watching the show and writing this in our production office, which happens to be near the entrance where the stars go to present on stage Madonna, Nicole Kidman and many other stars are waiting in the hall including Felicity Huffman and William H. Macy rehearsing their singing number before hitting the stage. So cool! But lets get back to the fashion there was so much to look at. I dont even know where to start! CHARLIZE THERON in blush Dior. AMAZING! STUNNING! My favorite look of the night. Loved her vintage 1920s Cartier diamond headpiece too she looked like a princess in her very, very low cut but very elegant gown. She was with her mom and publicist, who helped adjust her dress as she waited to go up on our interview platform. REESE WITHERSPOON rocked a red Zac Posen that looks like it was made just for her. She smiled and joked that she would need help getting up the steps, as she took the arm of one of our producers. I was digging her loose, tousled waves the ultimate bed head look. She looked tan and healthy like the ultimate California girl. SOFIA VERGARA also had to work a bit getting up the steps in her very fitted, very beautiful strapless teal Vera Wang. Im not sure photos will do this dress justice seeing all the intricate work up close let me tell you, this baby was a knockout. ANGELINA JOLIE. I cant even tell you how excited I was to be thisclose to the couple. (I even took this photo of them thats how close I was and it was surreal!) Angelina worked an ivory gown with thigh-high split and crimson detailing on the neckline, paired with matching bold red lips and Brad was his usual dapper self, even with a cane. I interviewed Brad, many, many years ago but I have never seen Angie in person oh yeah, I call her Angie now, were practically besties. Ha ha! She is even more stunning in person. The photogs, the fans, everyone on the carpet was just going crazy over these two. I cant image what it would be like to be them and have this kind of reaction as your normal everyday life. As they did an interview with Billy Bush, I watched them from three feet away and noticed they kept touching each other, holding hands or putting a hand on the back. They were a sweet, cute couple. They were nice and gracious and posed with various people on the red carpet. MADONNA. Wow. Shes got some presence. Only saw her once in person before, but theres something very commanding and electric about seeing her, especially close up. Always been a fan. Jessica Alba was totally striking in an embellished Gucci number Octavia Spencer also looked lovely in a lavender chiffon Tadashi Shoji gown and Christian Louboutin heels, which she kicked off backstage in the press room. Lea Michele and The Descendants star Shailene Woodley both in beautiful beaded Marchesa gowns. Loved the back of Claire Danes gown. Kate Beckinsale was flawless in white. Rooney Mara has perfect porcelain skin. Jane Lynch dropped her earring as she waited to do her interview. (She found it!) Then, Evan Rachel Wood came over and wanted to wait until Janes interview was done so she could meet her and it was cool to see her introduce herself. Michelle Williams in blue velvet Jason Wu came with her best friend Busy Phillips and they did our interview together. Fun! Oh, and the men. Let me tell you, I was around nothing but good looking guys. Clooney, Pitt, Rob Lowe (who looked directly at me and smiled), Matthew Morrison, Chris Colfer, Adam Levine, Guy Pearce, Gerard Butler. Leonardo DiCaprio set off fandemonium when he walked by. After the show ended, I was next to the forever beautiful Michelle Pfeiffer and her husband David E. Kelley and then Jessica Alba as everybody was waiting for their cars. Jessicas dress was one of the best of a night featuring many stunning ensembles. Well done, ladies, well done!
